This is a plugin that helps your content rank higher in search engine results by analyzing your posts and making suggestions about how you can improve your post from an SEO perspective. With a click of a button, your content is evaluated and given a score based on its structure and keyword density – and you can rest assured that Google will see the same targeted keywords that you intended for every blog post and page of your website. - SEO Rank Reporter
This plugin gives you the ability to keep track of the keywords you want to rank on or are already ranking with inside the comfort of your WP dashboard. Point of contention, if I may.
I find Hallo Bar EXTREMELY intrusive. It’s all I can do to close it as quickly as possible. The Wibya bars on the bottom are no better. Tho I think Klout’s transparent way of presenting a bottom bar is ok.
And I never knew what the Slide plugin was called. I duno…maybe it’s just me, but those things jumping at me, they always make me run away.
This brings up an interesting question. Are these types of plugins (Hello Bar and Slide bar) really effective at keeping people engaged for longer?
I would say no way. Where is the data? And if there is some data, then where is the recent data?
Here’s the thing. These plugins may be effective at keeping people longer on the site when they first come out. When there is a novelty factor to them. When you havent seen them before.
But once they become commonplace -which at this point I think they are- we become blind to them.
I duno…I could be wrong, but they only annoy me.

* I agree that Digg Digg is an excellent product, and they were included in my list of 2011. The problem is that I wanted to support Buffer, and because I am not a programmer, Sharebar made it easy. I also then noticed a Digg Digg problem with the LinkedIn plugin went away when I copied and pasted the code from LinkedIn into Sharebar. That right there is an example of a flexible and future-proof product. But if I didn’t need Buffer, I would also opt for Digg Digg.
* You can see from the comments after you that I have received a lot of contention over my choice of commenting plugins. My understanding of Livefyre was that you had to login through a social media profile to register – and for those that didn’t want to link their social media profiles with their comments, they were essentially locked out. True or false? And why did you change over?
* Glad you agree about Tweet Old Post. Simple – and it works!
* All in One is just a no brainer. I tried Yoast once and it was a headache. Yoast may make my list next year. but for the time being I’m sticking with AIO.
* Scribe is awesome – although there may be other tools out there, it has definitely helped in the SEO of my blog pages and posts. I believe it is well worth the cost. I’ll have to write a blog post about it to prove its value to you.
* WPTouch didn’t work for my last theme out of the box, but when it works, it is absolutely eloquent
* Let’s move on to your bone of contention. I agree with you in that I HATE the Wibiya bar. Hello Bar CAN be obnoxious – it’s all in how you use it. I lead people to other blog posts or other “soft” calls to action. If all they are used for is the old “Sign up for My xxyyy” or “Buy This Today!” then I agree.
What I have found with my Hello Bar is that I have had days where the click rate is above 1%. You can say, 99% of the people didn’t care. I say I was able to shift the attention of 1% to my call to action.
This also comes down to a philosophical debate. I get most of my traffic from Google Search. They come, they go. I want to do anything I can to get them to stay – and go somewhere I think they’d be interested in. That’s why that 1% is HUGE for me. And I monitor the CTR of my Hello Bar campaigns and change the content to keep it “fresh” when the rates go down.
Don’t know if that experience helps you in any way, but as long as I can get 1% CTR I’m going to continue to use it – and will continue to try to keep it “fresh” and “engaging.” Once people stop clicking I will agree with you
The Slide plugin only appears when you get to the bottom of a blog post. You could say, “Only the most engaged people go to the bottom, so why do you want to impede them with The Slider?” Well, I’m getting a 3% to 7% CTR here. Once again, that means that 93% to 97% of my visitors are ignoring it – assuming they get that far down. But based on my large number of visitors from Google Search results, I will take it as an interactive discovery tool to help expose my content to visitors.
Truth be told, web design trends change. A year from now these might all be “so 2012″ – but until then, I believe that bloggers should at least experiment and compare notes. I encourage everyone to comment here and share their rates and see what we can learn from each other.

I encourage bloggers to give a lot of serious thought to what commenting system they use because that determines what blogging communities will support your efforts by reading, commenting and sharing your content.
I have seen some bloggers using Disqus also use CommentLuv so that they encourage interaction from both communities, but Livefyre is definitely totally separate at this point and their new philosophy of favoring Livefyre blogs and discriminating against others will drive them even further afield.
If your audience is traditional business Disqus is favored. If you are a giving person who helps others and are part of the trend toward paying it forward and creating a better world, CommentLuv is where you fit best. If you want to get more than you give, Livefyre is for you.
Right now I still read and share some non-CommentLuv blogs; however, as more and more quality blogs emerge to support, those not active in the community will keep sliding down that priority list.
Many of us are going to need to cut down on plugins to speed up load time, so whenever possible much of the functionality currently provided by plugins can be replaced with coding.
Other plugins become unnecessary if you use advanced themes; for example, if you use Thesis you don’t really need an SEO plugin any more. While All-in-One-SEO is still the most popular, I suspect that Platinum SEO is more powerful – IF you can figure out how to configure it.
I’m not really a fan of Tweet Old Post because I believe bloggers should be sharing their best pillar content when someone asks for it using something like iTweetLive instead of auto-tweeting just any post. If that plugin allows you to select which posts it shares it might be useful – but it is still more overhead for your blog.
I really do need to start using Smush.it and I regularly use Wp-optimize. My favorite plugin of all time is the new CommentLuv Premium that merged 8 plugins into one and is highly useful for any blogger who chooses to be part of the dofollow CommentLuv collaborative community.
Broken Link Checker is really useful especially if you link out a lot. Contact Form 7 is the plugin of choice for forms and AskKim recommended the OnlyWire plugin I’ve been running.
The biggest question I have about plugins right now is caching plugins. Most bloggers run either W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache, but both are difficult to configure and the most likely plugins to cause conflicts when updating WordPress or updating or installing other plugins. I need to put together a team to figure out what works best and then publish our findings. Any volunteers?

Meandering around looking for options and opinions on new plugins for a new site and found WP SEO by Yoast, tutorial to set up here for Newbie’s http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-install-and-setup-wordpress-seo-plugin-by-yoast/ looks awesome. Has Sitemaps included plus, plus, plus.. so some older plugins no longer necessary.
Also experimenting with Social Media Widget on another site, add the plugin and structure according to your requirements as a widget.
Looking for a comments platform so some suggestions here I have not heard of will be looked at, thanks!

Interesting analysis on the comment plugins – and if there was one type of plugin that generated debate, it was this one.
Before I became a heavy Disqus user I looked into CommentLuv, and I felt that Disqus was more of a mature solution. I do realize that with CommentLuv’s recent upgrade, they have leveled the playing field.
I can see how CommentLuv can encourage more participation through its unique functionality. I plan to do some research into this – and will invite your feedback to include in a future blog post!
As for cutting down on plugins, I couldn’t agree with you more. However, the additional functionality is always attractive – which is why themes that build in more of these plugin functionality, like Thesis, are attractive.
Since your comment I have learned a great deal about how you use iTweetLive and I agree it would be a more ideal way to share content – but like anything else requires time. I use TweetOldPost because it is easy – and customizable enough so that it’s not too much of a spray and pray approach – although it is not the ideal solution.
As for your final question, I had so many issues with cache plugins that I decided not to use them at all. That being said, I have seen W3 be the recommended cache plugin from website hosting providers I have used in the past.

WordPress has permalink & tag options – but it does not give you the option to change the meta-title and meta-descriptions of your pages and posts, and these are critical for SEO. Make sense?

I tried changing from All in One to Yoast some time ago and had a bunch of issues come up, so I changed back. Yoast definitely offers potentially more, but All in One works out of the box whereas Yoast didn’t. I look forward to trying out his plugin again in the near future.
I would love to use SEO Image, but it has never worked with my themes. Glad you got it to work with yours!

Thanks Joan! Yes, I have tried Yoast, and while it looks awesome, when I swapped out All in One it completely messed up my system! This was 6 months ago, so things may have changed, but I would tread carefully on that one – although I completely agree that it has KILLER functionality!
It seems that there is a division amongst commenting systems, with people falling into either the Livefyre, CommentLuv, or Disqus camps. This website uses Disqus, and has for a few years. I believe that Disqus is probably the “standard” by now, but you should definitely look into these other two platforms as well.

As long as the functionality is not overlapping, I don’t see any issue. But there are always compatibility issues that you need to be aware of. Obviously, you never want to have multiple plugins implemented for the same functionality!

i use the yoast plugin for my seo but ive been looking for the best social media plugins so will give them a try. but i would like to state that i use the yoast plugin on my genesis framework theme and you loose the analysis tools that you normally have if you just use wordpress themes but it still great for optimising your pages and content

On the other hand, I realize that there are improvements being made to the plugin on a constant basis, and that it seems to be picking up popularity, showing up on the 1st page of the WordPress popular downloads page. Thanks for chiming in Nathan! Agreed on Premise, and it looks like Premise 2.0 is a solid upgrade. On paper, I agree that the specs for Yoast look awesome, but when I installed it on my site it created a bunch of problems. Now, this was several months ago, and I know it has improved since then. I even reached out to Yoast to ask for his help in installing the plugin!!!
On the other hand, Nathan, a good friend of mine who is involved in IT security asked me: Isn’t it safer to work with well-trusted plugins than to work with a newer one that does several things, potentially increasing your risk?
There’s no one right or wrong answer here, but glad to hear you got Yoast working for you!

Apparently Disqus does not give you link juice because the comments are not being indexed by Google. I have read of a way of hacking code to get the comments indexed, but sorry that I forgot the link. CommentLuv is a competing commenting platform that you may want to look at if you are looking into a solution with potentially more Google juice. Good luck with it!

Hi Neal. Thanks for taking the interest. I conduct seminars and I want to start using wordpress plugins to handle the workflow which is roughly:
- list my events
- allow others to purchase tickets
- allows package tickets for multiple events
- allows me to send free tickets (and get RSVP)
- handles reminders for the events to the purchasers (including cancellations if any)
- handles registrations at the event itself (maybe QR codes)
- allows follow up for comments on events and testimonials (even a feedback form)
- subscribe ticket purchasers to newsletter
That’s sort of what I’m looking for. I’m going to write to to the support centre for the plugins I mentioned and get their feedback on whether it’s possible.
p/s have you tried out speakpipe.com which is an app which allows people to leave internet voice mails. A great way to interact with the world and very elegant looking. I just installed it and it works brilliantly.

Thanks for letting me know Reza! Well, you’re asking a lot from a WordPress plugin to do all of that for you! My approach would be to find a web-based service that does that but also offers a WordPress plugin to complement their service. Do let me know if you find a plugin that accomplishes all of that!
As for SpeakPipe, nope haven’t tried it out, but I get contacted by enough people through normal means that I don’t think I’d have a use for it. I’ll definitely check it out for my clients, though. Thanks for sharing!

I know it can be done with a number of plugins. The challenge is to make them all talk to each other otherwise I’ll have to dome some offline work. The events management plugin I mentioned should be able to 75% of what I want. I’ll write to them. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Or if anyone is reading this who has a simpler way to do it, it’ll be great to hear what you think…

Livefyre is definitely starting to rival Disqus in terms of functionality. I have been a longtime Disqus user and have no reason to stop using it. I will say that Livefyre counts “Social Reactions” as comments, so if someone retweets your post it could be counted as a comment, which doesn’t make sense. On the other hand, the tagging features of Livefyre are pretty cool. Definitely worth trying out both platforms for a test spin.
SEO by Yoast is also a “newcomer” and gaining in popularity. If you were starting a website from scratch it would be great, but I had a number of integration problems when I tried it out on my websites. It also has a LOT of functionality, so while it could potentially replace multiple plugins, on the flipside you’re increasing your risk. That’s why there’s no reason for old blogs to change over, but if you’re starting a new one, you should definitely check it out.
