And it's great when they reply (most of them will since they probably don't expect a greeting from somebody other than their closer circle of friends) to say thank you. It's yet another big step in getting my name out in front of them. I also mention in my greeting of my location as well, eg., Happy Birthday Bob from Toronto! As you said, others will see this on the wall and if they are from international destinations, they could get curious to who I am and maybe even add me as a new friend.
