The New LinkedIn User Interface: What’s Changed?

NewLinkedIn began limited testing of their new user interface a few weeks ago and today announced that they were going to roll out their new “look” to everyone in the next week.  What’s changed?

I will be honest with you when I say that I was not one of the early testers of the new user interface, and I still do not have access to the new user interface.  But based on the public information available from LinkedIn’s blog, apparently the only thing that has changed is merely the user interface.  In other words, the look and feel is different, but there is no new functionality that has been added.  If you have already bought my LinkedIn book or have been an avid reader of my blog there is nothing to worry about: the underlying functionality and strategies that I have taught you up until now will still be valid in this new user interface.  And, according to LinkedIn, it should make it even easier for you to navigate around the site!

So, if all that has changed is the user interface, why is LinkedIn making this a big deal?  Here is what they say,

“On some pages, the new navigation can increase the amount of space available for page content by almost a third. In the coming weeks and months, look for continually improved and relevant content to occupy this space. Stay tuned!”

In other words, either more content or more advertising is coming your way soon.  Let’s hope for the content…

Of course, as I get access to the new user interface, I will report back to you all on my impressions in a separate blog post.  In the meantime, are you already using the new LinkedIn user interface?  What are your first impressions?  Please share!

I agree with Philippe Gadeyene's commments 110% and find new look harder to use and user unfriendly. Simply don't like it, and will likely use the site less then before.
  • The interface is more scattered, the home page has been split in a number of tabs which is unfortunate since the home page was a dashboard with all the information related to your LI account. To get to the same information now requires a number of clicks wasting time. The idea of the tabs is a good one and would have been great if only LI had kept the homepage as a dashboard. I am not sure what they were thinking about, another good idea gone bad. I can email you the screen shots.

    Hi Neal,

I had heard about the new interface in a magazine article early last month and while on LinkedIn last night saw it change right before my very eyes. It is taking some getting used to. The navigation Pane is gone instead we have a menu at the top that goes across on each page. This moves the content to the left and actually gives it more real estate to cover. The fonts are slightly bigger, too. I don't like the fact though that names and group discussion titles are no longer bolded. They are in a bigger font but I still feel that keeping them bolded is best.
