Twitter Direct Messages: Why I Don’t Read Them Anymore

Twitter Direct Messages: Why I Don’t Read Them Anymore

When I spoke at the Cool Twitter Conference in Los Angeles recently (I’ll be speaking there again in San Francisco on September 24 and in Orange County, CA on November 5), there were many in attendance who mentioned that they didn’t even use their personal email anymore to communicate with their friends.  After all, all of their friends were on Twitter, and they all had their Twitter accounts activated so that Direct Messages sent to them would automatically be sent to their cell phones.  Why bother with email? In fact, a friend at the conference asked why I hadn’t responded …

What is LinkedIn and Why Should You Join?

LinkedIn's Awesome Advanced Search Functionality

I attended a great local Tweetup last night in Orange County.  There were many people who I had communicated with on Twitter and finally had the chance to meet…the feeling was almost like seeing long lost friends!  I will save Tweetups for another blog post, because what interested me last night were how many people I met last night that were active on Twitter but not at all on LinkedIn.  Many saw the latter as just being a site for “professionals” or really didn’t know what to do with it.  The good news is that my Windmill Networking book on …

3 Social Networking Tips for the Unemployed (Part 2) – Leverage LinkedIn & Connect

In Part 1 of 3 Social Networking Tips for the Unemployed, I mentioned how it is never too late to Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty and explained the attitude that will help you network while looking for your next job.  This is important in interfacing with the physical network that you already have.  In Part 2 I would like to provide some social networking tips of how you approach your online networking activities via LinkedIn.  If you haven’t figured it out by now, LinkedIn is the place where you will be found by recruiters, and thus your presence on …

3 Social Networking Tips for the Unemployed (Part 1) – Pay It Forward

3 Social Networking Tips for the Unemployed (Part 1) – Pay It Forward

At most social networking events I attend, I am struck by the growing numbers of those that are in transition that are showing up looking to meet new people that will hopefully lead them to their next job.  As I tell people, you will not find your next job at a networking event.  But with the right attitude, you may be able to find people who will help you along your journey. With the wrong attitude, you will go home frustrated and confused.  If you have already attended a networking event, congratulations, as you are already one step ahead of …

LinkedIn for College Students: Begin Your Networking Early!

LinkedIn for College Students: Begin Your Networking Early!

I had one of those social networking moments where a stranger at Starbucks introduced himself to me after seeing the book on my table was Dan Schawbel‘s Me 2.0, the best-selling book on personal branding.  The fact that this gentlemen even knew the book and had read it was surprising.  The fact that he was teaching college students about social networking and LinkedIn was even more startling. I didn’t know such a class existed! Can you imagine how far ahead of the social networking game you would have been had not only LinkedIn been around when you were in college but …

Twitter Followers vs Following: What is the Ideal Ratio?

Twitter Followers vs Following: What is the Ideal Ratio?

The never-ending question of quality vs quantity of Twitter Followers is similar to the argument of how many people you should connect with on LinkedIn or “friend” on any other social networking site.  Yesterday I wrote that without enough connections on LinkedIn, you will not show up in as many search results.  With Twitter, the Followers vs Following ratio is an important one that will also speak lots about your Twitter Brand. Windmill Networking treats all of the social networking sites the same.  It all comes down to your objective, your brand, and implementation of these through the unique functionalities …

LinkedIn Profile Tips: The 10 Mistakes You Want to Avoid and Why

LinkedIn Profile Tips.  A lot of people tell you what you should be doing, but what about what you shouldn’t be doing? LinkedIn is the place to not only find others but also to be found.  And that is why you need a profile that not only helps you get found but also will entice people to contact you once they view your profile.  I see many people making fundamental mistakes that actually work against them in this aspect.  If you’re going to spend time putting together a profile, I assume you want to maximize your chances of being contacted …

Twitter for Real Estate Agents

Twitter for Real Estate Agents

I have had the pleasure of “meeting” many real estate agents recently on social networking sites LinkedIn and Twitter.  I should point out in advance that I have a positive view of those in real estate; not only is my brother an agent but I have also signed up to get licensed if and when I can find the spare time. Most recently, I met with my good friend Cari Gilbert and her good friend Lynn Aglipay to discuss how they can use social media to assist in their real estate practice.  One of my So Cal Sushi LinkedIn Group …

The World is Lonely with Twitter Down

The World is Lonely with Twitter Down

Twitter not working today, you thought? Today we all witnessed a massive Twitter outage, which apparently was caused by hackers that also targeted Facebook.  Whenever we lose something we love, as we did temporarily with Twitter down for a few hours, it gives us a chance to reconsider how much value that thing has in our everyday lives.  And Twitter, for those that use it and understand it, is a lovable thing that we can no longer live without. With this morning’s Twitter outage, what did I miss the most?  Exactly where I see Twitter has value in:

What is #FollowFriday on Twitter?

What is #FollowFriday on Twitter?

There are still a lot of people who ask me this question, both new Twitter users as well as veterans.  I thought I would write a post that would hopefully serve as a resource for the entire Twitter community to better understand this phenomenon.  It also serves as a conclusion that I have reached on how to #FollowFriday that will ideally serve as advice for you as well. If you have been on Twitter for awhile, you have probably noticed the messages on mainly Fridays (although they start coming on Thursday and last until the beginning of the following week…) …
