Yes, I agree with you 100%. Over the past several months, the Internet Marketers have figured LinkedIn out and are now aggressively creating fake profiles and trying to connect with open networkers. I am now looking at each one, similar to you, that doesn't personalize the invite. My new rules for connecting are: No Photo, No Bio, and/or No _Recommendations_ means I won't accept your request. I've written about how to spot fake LinkedIn profiles in this blog, so if you take a few seconds its easy to spot them. Now I'm starting to report their invites as Spam to LinkedIn as well as respond with IDKs. It's a different world on LinkedIn these days, and we need to fight back!
Hey, Dennis, by the way, I'll be rolling out a new social media content website where I'm looking for monthly contributions of unique content and would LOVE to have you contribute on Social Ads - would help promote your business. Send me an email if you might be interested: neal at windmillnetworking dot com
Cheers!

My rule is that I'll accept someone I don't know, but only if they have a connection in common or send me a private message that explains the context. I suppose there is no real downside to having people you don't know on your list, but at the same time, I wonder about these folks with no photos, an incomplete profile, and only 5 other connections.

Neal, I’ve struggled with this, even though I’m only at 2,000 connections on LinkedIn. What a helpful article!!! Thanks so much for clearly laying out the value of LinkedIn.
I've been moving into all this social networking the last 2 months and there have been a lot of "now what do I do? why am I doing this? how do I...?..."
Lots to still learn!
Thanks again,
